They're close cousins. Irish Breakfast tea (the tea most associated with black tea Ireland is known for) typically leans harder on Assam, giving it an even bolder, maltier profile. English Breakfast tends to be a bit more balanced and versatile — strong enough for milk, but smoother on its own. If you love a very heavy, malty cup, Irish Breakfast is the direction to look; if you want strength with more balance, English Breakfast is the better everyday choice.

As a black tea, English Breakfast naturally contains antioxidants (flavonoids and catechins) and a moderate amount of caffeine — generally less than coffee. Many drinkers find the combination of caffeine and the tea's naturally occurring L-theanine gives a steadier, calmer lift than coffee, without the sharp crash. As with any caffeinated beverage, moderation is the key to enjoying it well.
